Should we take shortcuts that provide greater and faster gains, but that pollute more? Should we support mass production in factories with poor working conditions? Should we buy clothes that are cheap but of lower quality? Some choices cost more than other. But they are worth taking. They provide better products, better working conditions and are more sustainable.
At Devold, we have made choices since 1853. We choose long-term relationships with our workers, we choose methods that are gentle on both the animals and the environment. We make choices that create a better future for us and for our planet.
Natural choices
We love to spend time in the great outdoors. The love for nature has been inherited through generations. That is why we also have a responsibility to take care of it.
Our ancestors chose wool as a material because it was the textile that worked. Because wool provided the protection required in harsh weather conditions. We now know that wool is also a sustainable material, which does not polute, which can be broken down when the garment's life is over and which gives the nutrients back to the soil.
100 % traceability
All Devold garments are traceable, with more than 60 % being traceable all the way back to the exact farm that produced the wool. See for yourself, on your garment’s label!
84 % natural
That’s the percentage of wool used to produce Devold’s collections. In addition to wool, we use natural, degradable materials such as Tencel, but for some garments – such as socks – we blend in some synthetics to make them more durable and elastic. We work to make all synthetic materials degradable.
-20% plastic and cardboard
Since 2018, we’ve reduced plastic packaging by 20% and the amount of cardboard by 26% in our production.
Wool is nature's own superfiber and provides the best protection against demanding environments. The polar explorers can verify this. For over 160 years we have been working with wool to make quality clothes for people who need equipment they can trust.
To earn that trust, we have chosen to ensure full traceability in our value chain, from sheep to shop. In addition, our wool comes from carefully selected farmers who have been producing wool for generations. That way we can make clothes for people who are just as passionate about quality as us.
97% from our own factory
Almost all of our garments are manufactured in our own factory. To reduce our carbon footprint, we’ll try to move all of our production to our factory in Lithuania.
90% land and sea transport
Although we transport merino wool across large distances, we mainly use transport by sea or land.
100% recycled
All of our cut-offs from our textile production is recycled. These go into new products.
On average, Norwegians have 359 garments in their wardrobes. Every year we throw away 23 kilos of clothes.
Following trends is a choice, but we believe that function never goes out of style. When we choose to harvest from nature and make clothes from natural materials, patience is crucial. The finest wool needs time to grow its long, strong fibers.
We take no shortcuts. When you choose Devold, you can wear your garment with a clear conscience. A garment that keeps you warm and that will last - not just for a season, but for generations.
People are the heart of Devold. The people we have chosen, and the people who choose us. In Devold we are like a family, no bigger than a flock. For almost 200 years, the very foundation has been that everyone who works for Devold should thrive at work.
We want you to be sure that the clothes you buy are knitted by people who thrive at work, and that the animals that grow the finest wool are sheep that are treated well. That the soil they step on and feed on, has time to rebuild and have a positive effect on the ecosystem rather than the opposite.
That is why the people behind the sheep are also part of our extended family. The few, selected farmers that we have chosen to work with because they share our values.
For 167 years we have made conscious and long-term choices, so you only need to make one: Choose wool.
Environmentally certified
Our factory is certified according to IMO 140001, Oeko-Tex and follows the EU's REACH standard. All products are Oeko-Tex certified and our subcontractors follow our Code of Conduct.
Animal welfare
The quality of wool depends on how the animals have been treated, which is why "The Five Freedoms for Animal Welfare" is at the core of the farmers we work with.
Your clothes are made here
